A very yuriful submission to the jam! Languid and dreamlike until it becomes very, very real, romance writing with tones of blood loss and oxygen deprivation. You can like. FEEL the hooks getting into both of them as the whirlpool of events sucks them up and it makes for a read that leaves you gasping for more like that ending, GOD what a great hook! And the art has such a great style to compliment it too! I love how Voda and Rusalka look, Voda's sorta handsome countenance and vulnerability, Rusalka's cuteness that always shines through like, no matter what she's up to she never loses those visual qualities of innocence and it makes her such a fascinating little creature.... Overall it's a great read and a mighty swing at a first game ^^
Rusalka is such a cutie! Her simple and earnest demeanor is very endearing to me, and I love the fact that you made a point to give her a distinctive, well-thought-out design~ For that matter, the art writ large in this VN is excellent: I was delighted to see such a wide variety of expressions for the main girls—complete with different poses and body language, no less!
What I'm really interested in seeing more of, however, is Voda. Her feelings, her desires, her backstory, what she wants out of life, etc. We get a few hints at it during the story, but with how quickly things move, the poor girl just ends up shocked, frazzled, and horrified the whole time—not that that's a bad thing, certainly, heheheh~
Still, I would've loved to have seen more about the relationship with her family, the tension between her supportive mother and her pigheaded father, and just exactly how things deteriorated so severely such that Voda genuinely felt she had no way out and that life had absolutely nothing left to offer her. That's the sort of thing I'm still curious about: What pushed her to that extreme as opposed to, say, simply running away—or, if that was an ill-conceived impulsive in retrospect, how much trouble has this impulsiveness caused for her into the past? You know what I mean~?
For that matter, with as much as I liked what we saw of Rusalka, I can only imagine that more scenes of Voda trying to interact with her would've been fun~ Not just to give Ms. Mermaid more screentime, of course, but also to flesh out Voda and Rusalka even further—perhaps to hammer home just how truly alien Rusalka's perspective is compared to Voda's; or perhaps to show that, despite their differences in anatomy and psychology alike (and despite Rusalka's favorite food, heh heh heh), they ultimately have quite a lot in common~
But this comment is long enough. Very nice work, Umbring, especially for a first VN! I hope to see more art and stories from you in the future~
Thank you so much!! i really appreciate the compliments toward Rusalka i was banging my head against the wall in the earlier sketches of her. And it would very cool to delve more into Voda's character or the world, i hadnt really thought much beyond what was put into the story but expanding upon it could be really cool, maybe in like a sequel game or something :3
Fantastic art - creepy and delightful!! Great work
THIS WAS SO GOOD!! The contrast between the art and horror really popped, fantastic work!!
Sure, there's death and anguish, but the crux of the story being a communication issue between species (or beings of different levels of socialization) was captivating. Everything fit together succinctly; I felt that not a word nor image was wasted. Great atmosphere!
I loved this... I love the way it looks so so so so much!!!! And Voda... ooooouuugh :(((((( she just wanted freedom and got more than she ever asked for... This girl was dealt what is possibly the worst hand she ever could have, no where to run to, except back to that diving bell. And worst of all, she got punished for it to the point of breaking. I hope she'll be okay, even if realistically, that isn't likely...
I also wanna point out that I loooove the name you gave to the pretty fish lady, Rusalka, like the siren-like water entity from slavic folklore!!!! Such a lovely touch >w< And once more I gotta say your art is phenomenal, expressive and adorable, despite the grim feel of the story <3 Might just be my bias towards cartoony looks like this but I just thought it looked super unique! Do consider telling more stories such as this...
Also Rusalka is mad cute I lowkey want her!
This is the first game I played from the jam and the one I keep thinking about. There's something about how concise it is, about how the entire game's world is only the sea and the diving bell that makes me keep thinking about it. Great work!
This was really good, it really made me think about how people can get into relationships to save themselves from something, only to find out they were ignoring the flaws of the relationship because they were so desperate to escape something else. The story was heartbreaking, it felt almost like a tragic stage play, especially since it focused on a folkloric creature!
Your art is very charming, very polished. Thank you for sharing.
This was so great! The story really surprised me a few times and the art style is absolutely adorable! It’s amazing how something can be so cute and horrifying at the same time lol.
thank you!!! The cute horror contrast was one of my goals!
oh gosh...that was a rough ending 😭 but i liked this, thank you for sharing! your art style is cute and unique, and the yellow/teal color scheme was very refreshing. the sequence at the beginning when voda says "of course (i'll be safe), mother" and then you see her facedown in the water, with rusalka glowing above her, was well done. a story like this...really shows how short-sighted thinking can get you in trouble. but that's the sort of decision-making people in stressful situations can be forced to make! so i thought it worked well/felt right. i tried not to think rusalka was cute, but she was cute 😂💛 "do you understand?" "...not really" awww
Thank you so much!! Im glad you liked it :3 and no ur right she is very cutie lol
